Upgrade Path Rules
Windows 7 can be upgraded from any previous versions of Windows Vista. It will depend on the version you have installed, and the version of Windows 7 you are going to, as to whether you will need to perform either an In-Place Upgrade or a Custom Install. If you are upgrading from a previous version of XP, you will need to back up your files and settings, perform a Custom Install, and then re-install your existing files.
In-Place Upgrade: this will keep your files, settings, and programs intact from your current version of Windows.
Custom (clean) Install: this will give you the option to either completely replace your current operating system or install Windows on a specific drive or partition.
To upgrade from an earlier operating system than Windows XP (e.g. Windows 95 or Windows 2000) you will need to purchase a full license of Windows 7 and perform a custom install. Upgrading to the Windows 7 N versions will require a custom install.
